a 18/09/07 Flares-Not Part Of Glory Culture. a

At the commencement of this season it was fantastic to see 50 or 60 younger Glory fans in colours on the lower section of the shed, singing and chanting. Their presence, fervor, passion and commitment to the cause have been clearly evident in the three home games to date.

Sunday Sept 15th, the young guns overstepped the line. The sight of flares like the sound of a helicopter to a Vietnam vet brings shocking memories of violent NSL days in Sydney and Melbourne. For years NSL clubs has messages in their programs and signs around the ground that stated the lighting of flares were prohibited. Still it happened, the signs were ignored, and the lighting of flares usually led to fan violence on the terraces or outside the ground. For those who have visited Sommer Street in Melbourne or Edensor Park Park in Sydney, the memories would still be fresh.

Glory Shed supporters have never needed the addition of flares to attract attention, entertain the crowd or cheer the boys on. If anything the flares are a distraction to the players, a worry to families and can be dangerous. More disappointing was that this behaviour continued outside the ground with flares being thrown under cars and buses in an effort to shock motorists and draw more attention to themselves, testosterone working overtime! Setting flares off in the ground is one thing, carrying the behaviour on outside is another which could have serious ramifications for the club which these young fans claim to love. On Sunday within the ground the security and police were lack lustre in their response to the flares being set off. I have seen security move five times quicker if they spot a smoker in the crowd than they did yesterday when the flares were set off.Dispite the protestations of the larger Shed group to throw these hooligans out, they eventually evicted one idiot. The security and police need to act quickly and efficiently to stamp out this mindless sort of behaviour before it becomes endemic amongst the younger supporters as the reason to go to football. I call on the club to take swift and decisive action against any person or persons using flares in the ground. In my opinion they should be banned from attending for the season and their re-admittance should be subject to good behaviour. The message delivered on Fox Sports on Sunday to the other Hyundai league clubs was that Perth Glory had sunk to another low, that of copying the less attractive sight of passionate football behaviours.I am sure this is not the image our new owners would want to portray to the football community around Australia.

Well done to the Shed for voicing their disapproval of this loutish behaviour, now all we need are for the club to get serious or the young guns to pull their head in. I would prefer the latter action but if the behaviour continues I would ask the club to take the former.

21/02/07    Open Letter to the Glory Shed from Jamie Harnwell
Open letter to the Glory Shed Supporters Club committee and members

Firstly, on behalf of all the players I would like to thank you for all your support during what has been a tough season. We are lucky that we have supporters who will stand behind us win, lose or draw and are very appreciative that you never stop singing your hearts out for the lads.

With the knowledge of that I believe that it is necessary for me to tender an apology on behalf of the players regarding the last Tour of Duty. It has come to my attention that the supporter group were disappointed with the lack of recognition shown by some of the players towards them at the end of the two games.

Now without trying to make excuses about what happened, those two games really saw the end of any realistic chance of Perth Glory making the top 4. After the Central Coast game I have rarely felt so devastated having lost a game that really we should have got something out of and I think that was the reason that so few of the players acknowledged the wonderful support that you had given us through out the game. The atmosphere in the change rooms after the game was like a funeral and showed how much the boys were hurting.

As for the Sydney game it was more of the same. We were so disappointed in ourselves for not winning a game in which we had really set ourselves a platform to go on with it.

As I said before, I am not making excuses for the team. I know that each and every member of the Tour of Duty would have been hurt and disappointed by the result and performances from those two games and regardless of the players disappointment there is no reason that they should not have come over to show their appreciation of your efforts.

All I can say is that the same mistake will not be made again. A Players Code of Conduct document is being prepared by the Club at the moment which will ensure this. The importance of maintaining a close and loyal bond with our supporters will be stressed to all players arriving at the club to ensure that they know that while the supporters appreciate their efforts on the field, it is the efforts off the field that has made this club so strong.

I would ask for you all to remain loyal members not only of The Shed but also Perth Glory and know that your support has inspired and will continue to inspire the players of Perth Glory in each and every match we play.

Yours truly,

Jamie Harnwell
